If you’ve seen any of my previous reviews for Pixar “Art of” books such as Toy Story 3, Cars 2 or Toy Story Postcard set, then you know that I hold these books in very high regard. That remains the case with the latest release (with the longest title) from Chronicle Books, The Art of Pixar – The Complete Colorscripts and Select Art from 25 Years of Animation.
You’ll find the gorgeous colorscripts for Pixar’s 12 feature films, plus additional color scripts for many of their more recent shorts. The 317 page book compiled by Amid Amidi with a foreword by John Lasseter is a treasure. Each color script is a work of beautiful work of art. Some are done in pastel (Ralph Eggleston’s Toy Story, Dominique’s R. Louis’ Monsters, Inc., Bill Cone’s Cars), while others are digital (Lou Romano‘s The Incredibles & Up, Dice Tsutsumi‘s Toy Story 3, Sharon Calahan‘s Cars 2).
Of course my favorite is Ralph Eggleston‘s digital WALL-E colorscripts. So effective and a great reminder of a truly perfect film. There are some bonus colorscripts here too for some of the shorts. As the book states, some shorts don’t have any or some colorscripts are incomplete due to time constraints. You will find a few stunning panels for Boundin‘, Presto, Jack-Jack Attack and Lifted. Others for the more recent Mater shorts are a bit more complete.
If you are a Pixar fan, an animation fan or just appreciate art, then this book is a must have. It’s available to own this week at such places as Amazon.com or Barnes & Noble.
