Tidbits
- Toy Story 2 was originally scheduled as a direct to DVD release. John Lasseter was asked to return to direct when the film ran into story problems and Disney decided to release it in theaters.
- Elements added to expand the film for theatrical release include the opening sequence with Buzz battling Evil Emperor Zurg, Woody’s “nightmare” , the character of Wheezy, an expanded version of the luggage-belt chase, Prospector being “mint in the box” and “Jessie’s Song”.
- David Ogden Stiers was originally cast earlier as The Prospector, but was replaced by Kelsey Grammar.
- C0-director Ash Brannon proposed the idea of a yard sale where a toy collector recognizes Woody as a rare collectible and distracts Andy’s Mom so that he can steal him.
- Woody as part of a collectible set was originally part of A Tin Toy Christmas draft.
- Senorita Cactus, a Mexican sidekick to the Prospector, was replaced by yodleeing cow-girl Jessie. A strong female character was suggested by Nancy Lasseter.
- Pixarian voices include Andrew Stanton as the Evil Emperor Zurg, Jeff Pidgeon as the Green Aliens & Joe Ranft is memorable (yet again) as Wheezy, the Penguin.
- The film premiered on November 12, 1999 to students at CalArts.
- At the time of its release, Toy Story 2 became the 2nd highest grossing animated film of all time (behind The Lion King).
- Empire magazine ranked Toy Story 2 #170 on their list of the 500 Greatest Films of All Time. The film was also featured on one of their special 100 covers that were released:
