Tidbits

  • WALL-E was conceived during a 1994 lunch with Andrew Stanton, John Lasseter, Pete Docter and Joe Ranft. Stanton asked, “What if mankind had to leave Earth and somebody forgot to turn off the last robot?”
  • Stanton and Pete Docter developed the film under the title of Trash Planet for two months in 1995, but they did not know how to develop the story and Docter chose to direct Monsters, Inc. instead.
  • The idea stuck with Stanton and he began working on the story during downtime making Finding Nemo.
  • The human characters went through many iterations including a more “gel-like” appearance. He finally settled on the idea of “big babies” whose bones had disintegrated from so many years in outer space.
  • To achieve a more film like appearance (flaws and all), Pixar hired Dennis Muran and Academy Award winning cinematographer Roger Deakins to help with how the camera deals with things like lighting and atmosphere
  • Pixar voice talent include Elissa Knight (EVE) and Andrew Stanton & Jeff Pidgeon as Hoverchair Humans.
  • WALL-E won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film and was nominated for Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Original Song (“Down to Earth”), Best Achievement in Sound Editing and Best Achievement in Sound Mixing.
  • Empire magazine ranked WALL-E #373 on their list of the 500 Greatest Films of All Time.
  • As part of the Oscar campaign, Disney made the script available for download. You can view or download it here.
  • Don’t miss Derek Thompson’s amazing storyboards over at Rotten Tomatoes.
  • Here’s what each character’s name stands for:
    • Wall-E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter – Earth Class)
    • EVE (Extra-terrestrial Vegetation Evaluator)
    • M-O (Microbe -Obliterator)
