Tidbits
- According to David Price’s book The Pixar Touch, Lasseter was inspired when Tom Porter brought his infant son into work and Lasseter became fascinated by his proportions. A baby’s head was huge compared to the rest of his body. It struck Lasseter’s funny bone and he began to wonder what a young Luxo lamp might look like.
- Luxo, Jr. was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short. It was the first computer generated short to do so.
- It was re-released at theaters on November 24, 1999 along with Toy Story 2.

- ACMI Director, Tony Sweeney, handed over the giant lamp to Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer, John Lasseter and President, Dr. Ed Catmull. The gift of the 6.5-meter tall Luxo Jr was a gesture of friendship by ACMI, who created the world’s largest Luxo lamp in conjunction with the ‘Pixar: 20 Years of Animation’ exhibit.
